Mission:

The mission of Nantucket Soundkeeper is to protect the marine waters bounded by Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. Our motto is "Protect Today, Preserve Forever"

Nantucket Sound has long been recognized as a national treasure, an oceanic wilderness of great biological diversity with habitats ranging from the open ocean to salt marshes. Nantucket Soundkeeper is working to preserve the Sound's unique ecological, cultural, recreational, and aesthetic qualities through advocacy, public education and legal action.

Nantucket Soundkeeper is a program of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, a non-profit, environmental organization based in Hyannis, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. The Alliance was formed in 2001 to protect and preserve Nantucket Sound from industrial development. Its leadership and membership include environmental, business, and government professionals, and thousands of concerned citizens.

Our goals include:

 * Protecting Water Quality
 * Conserving Natural Habitats
 * Preventing innapropriate development in and around the Sound.
 * Monitoring enforcement of enviornmental laws and regulations
 * Providing outreach and environmental education

Major Programs:

SOUND PATROL. Nantucket Soundkeeper is a nonprofit, citizen-based, water patrol organization whose special responsibility is to be the public advocate and steward for the Sound. Our visible presence on the water sends the message that Nantucket Soundkeeper is patrolling the waterway and dealing with the water pollution issues or misuse that are important to the community. Part investigator, scientist, lawyer, lobbyist, and public relations agent, the Nantucket Soundkeeper Patrol Boat serves as a physical extension of our advocacy assuring the citizenry's right to a healthy marine environment.

NANTUCKET SOUND WATER QUALITY COLLABORATIVE In 2006, Nantucket Soundkeeper entered into a monitoring collaborative to assess the health of the Sound's waters and habitats, to guide Sound-wide management planning, and to promote local community stewardship of Nantucket Sound.  This is the first comprehensive monitoring program undertaken for Nantucket Sound.

 EDUCATION AND OUTREACH. Education and outreach to the local communities on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are major components of our Soundkeeper program.  Our goal is to educate and inform the citizens, who will in turn become stewards of Nantucket Sound and advocate for its long-term protection.  Soundkeeper is active in local schools and at community events throughout southeastern New England.
