We asked island non-profits about their current needs and this is their response listed alphabetically by organization.

The African Artists’ Community Development Project seeks $500 scholarships to send Zambian orphans to high school. Some of these kids helped build the orphanage with their own hands and deserve a chance at a better future.

Audubon Society at Felix Neck wishes for free or low rent housing for their summer camp counselors, five $175 microscopes, a scanner, new laptop, digital projector and two personal microphones ($175 each).

The Cape Cod & Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross needs an emergency vehicle for disaster services on Martha’s Vineyard and wishes for a new or gently used van/SUV . The existing vehicle is old and unsafe. They will also need someone to perform regular maintenance of the vehicle.

The Dukes County Regional Housing Authority wishes for a $2,300 swing set, tower and slide for a new playground shared by the Jenny Ways homes and the Fisher Road Townhouses. The Authority needs $19,000 to implement an innovative landscaping plan for the Fisher Road Townhouses in Edgartown. It will create individual tenant yards, defines common spaces and enhance “curbside appeal” in benefit to tenants, the surrounding neighborhood and housing advocacy efforts Island-wide. Fencing $4,000; Soil & seeding $5,000; Trees & shrubs $10,000

Habitat for Humanity is building a home in Vineyard Haven. They have labor but need doors, bathroom fixtures, countertops, unused plywood sheetas, Azek or Kleer trim, insulation, flooring, interior lighting and roofing shingles.

Hostelling International Martha’s Vineyard needs their chimney cleaned and a new washing machine. Outside they need lawn furniture, crushed stone for the driveway and clean sand for the volleyball court.

International Film Festival wishes for a used van/SUV to transport equipment from venue to venue, free office space in Vineyard Haven and accommodations on island to host visiting filmmakers.

Island Affordable Housing needs a scanner (new or used).

Island Children’s School is looking for people to join their Board. They also need a canister vacuum cleaner, a scanner/ fax/answering machine and a CD/Tape player to create a listening center. For the kids they wish for children's size rakes and brooms and dress up clothes for ages 2-5.

The Island Food Pantry wishes for a double door stainless steel heavy duty commercial refrigerator, $2319.

The Marine and Paleobiological Research Institution wishes for a $99 refractometer to measure the salinity of estuary and open waters and a $250 bulb for their computer projector. They also seek an adult volunteer who would work two or three mornings/afternoons a week to help with everything from record keeping to grant writing to research. MPRI has no staff  and the Directors and Officers are not compensated.

Since more filmmakers have switched to HD, the MV Independent Film Festival needs a $3,600 Sony HVR-M25U HDV recorder/player to show these works and they offer to share it with the other island film festivals.

The MV Girls Ice Hockey Booster Club wishes for a sponsor of a full set of gear (excluding skates) for incoming players who can’t afford equipment, $500.

The Nantucket Soundkeeper wishes for a boat trailer that can accommodate his 17’ patrol boat.

Phyllis Vecchia Creative Drama wishes for $2,000 to supplement an intergenerational drama workshop that has seniors at Windemere putting on plays with preschoolers. She is also looking for $3,500 to re-implement her kindergarten program in the schools. As for volunteers, she needs help with fundraising, grant writing, secretarial work and web design.

Plum Hill Preschool (Waldorf) wishes for a miracle. They are struggling due to increased rent and seek a permanent home. They also want new board members interested in furthering holistic, nature-based education.

The Polly Hill Arboretum wishes for a $575 portable Dosatron fertilizer injector (11gpm) to accurately apply liquid fertilizer in the grennhouse and on the grounds. Also, a $600 Davis Vantage Pro 2 Wireless Weather Station, an essential tool for evaluating plant hardiness and adaptability. The station records high/low temperature, wind speed and direction and precipitation.

The Safe Haven Camp for children with HIV/AIDS needs 150 T-shirts printed with their logo for counselors and campers at the April session. They also need a new IMAC computer with a flat screen. Most importantly, they seek scholarships for campers whose families can't afford to send them ($1,000 per camper for the week).

Second Chance Animal Rescue wishes to move out of their inadequate back yard faciliy and build a much needed “no-kill” facility for the island. They need land, a building and complete animal furnishings and fixtures. Also, they have a vet that will do low cost early spay/neuter but need a medically equipped van to make this important program a reality..

Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation wishes for:

  • A $900 plastic “hoop house” tractor storage shed,
  • A quality wood stove in good shape, for the Cedar Tree Neck Cottage, that's capable of heating 1,000 square feet. Estimated cost $1,000 new.
  • A new or used small dump truck in good condition for use by property management staff. Estimated cost (new) $40,000 

  • A new $25,000, or used, commercial wood chipper,
  •  A new or good quality used digital camera, 6 or more megapixels, with zoom lens, and
  • New software for tracking donors/donations, Donorperfect has been recommended; $10,000 installed on site or a monthly fee for web based site hosting.

Although active since 1975, the Vineyard Council on Hunger now needs its own 501(c)(3) and wishes for professional help with State and Federal forms and filings.

Vineyard Health Care Access wishes for $2,000 a month to provide an Emergency Assistance Fund to help Islanders who can not afford prescription medication and/or transportation to medical appointments. They use a voucher program so that clients pay 50% and the fund pays 50%, up to a maximum of $100 but the Fund is currently unfunded, despite an ongoing need to help those with urgent needs who are temporarily uninsured or undersinsured.

Windemere Nursing Home wishes to completely update/renovate Unit 2 at a total cost of $708,000 for everything from roof, window and door repair to adjustable height beds and room furniture. This is the independent/assisted living wing and the renovations will give residents more private/homelike living spaces.

Windemere is also looking for $3,000 annually to continue their successful Intergenerational "Buddy" Program. The residents of Windemere and the students of the Chilmark School second/third grade have a yearly "Buddy" program. They match up residents with the students and buy the students cameras. The students visit monthly to show their "Buddy" their photographs.  The photographs are used to open dialogue between the old and the young. The students discuss their lives growing up on the island while the elders reflect back on their childhoods and share their memories.
 Windemere is entering the third year of the program but the grant expired and they hope a donor might be interested in helping this worthwhile project continue.

The Yard really needs two vehicles either cars, vans or trucks (used or new) for transporting summer artists in residence. They also want to refurbish kitchens in the residences and need drip coffee makers (3), microwaves (2), toaster ovens (2), flatware and large cooking pots, caseroles and frying pans. These can be new or used but in good condition. Outside, the wish for, lawn furniture, picnic tables and folding tables with plastic or washable table cloths.
